Available Tests
The ECU Testing Center administers a variety of different tests. There is essential information available regarding each test; including testing requirements, fees, restrictions and more.
Please note each student’s academic profile is unique, therefore, we encourage students to consult with an Academic Advisor prior to testing, to ensure that the test the student is planning to take is the right one for their program of study.
Weekday testing within the ECU Testing Center may be monitored with video surveillance to ensure and uphold academic integrity.

ACT
The ACT consists of five sections: English, Math, Reading, Science and an optional Essay. The total exam time is 3 hours and 30 minutes with No Essay and costs $46.00. The total exam time is 4 hours with the Essay and costs $62.50. Late registration fees are $29.50 and stand-by fees are $53.00.
What to bring on test day: Printed copy of admission ticket with photo, Acceptable photo ID, number 2 pencils, approved calculator, extra batteries, and a snack for break.
CLEP
CLEP tests are currently offered for 34 different exams within 5 subject areas. Exam time varies depending on exam selection, however most exams are 90 minutes. Total cost for each CLEP test is $125.00; a $95.00 fee paid directly to College Board during registration, and a $30.00 scheduling fee paid to the Testing Center.
Registration for CLEP exams are a two-step process:
- Register online through College Board.
- Call the ECU Testing Center at (252)328-6811 to schedule your appointment. Purchased CLEP vouchers will expire 6 months after the purchase date. There is a 3 month waiting period for students who wish to retake an exam.

Free CLEP vouchers can be obtained by registering and completing coursework through Modern States. Modern States’ program, Freshman Year for Free, is intended to let students earn up to one year of college credit without tuition or textbook expenses. They offer more than 30 free, self-paced courses that are designed to prepare students for CLEP test offered by College Board. CPCE
The CPCE consists of 160 multiple choice questions from 8 different subject areas. The total testing time is 4 hours. The CPCE is offered from 2 testing platforms: Anywhere Proctor Browser (APB) & Computer-Based Testing (CBT). APB testing fees are $75.00 and CBT testing fees are $150.00
What to bring on test day: 2 valid, acceptable forms of ID.
DSST
DSST exams are currently offered for 38 different subject areas. All exams are 2 hours long and most exams are 100 multiple choice questions. Total cost for each exam is $115.00, an $85.00 fee paid directly to DSST, and a $30.00 scheduling fee paid to the ECU Testing Center. DSST exams are free to approved military personnel. Registration for DSST exams is completed on the day of the exam at the Testing Center.
What to bring on test day: Valid government issued ID, credit card for payment, and a calculator (if approved for test).
GRE General
The GRE General Test consist of three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Total exam time is 3 hours 45 minutes and cost $205.00. The GRE General Test is offered at on select dates at our center and more frequently at the Prometric Testing Center in Greenville, NC.
Praxis
The Testing Center offers both Praxis I and Praxis II on select dates each month. Testing time and cost varies depending on selected test.
What to bring on test day: admission ticket, valid government issued photo ID, other required items for specific tests.
Proctored Exams
Proctored exams are offered for students taking courses at other institutions at a rate of $15 per hour. Prior to scheduling, students must know their exam window and exam duration. To schedule, please call the ECU Testing Center at (252)328-6811.
Students taking courses at ECU should consult with their instructor about exams and the delivery method (i.e., Respondus Monitor).
SAT
The SAT consists of 5 sections: Reading, Writing and Language, Math (no calculator), Math (calculator), and an optional Essay. Total exam time for the SAT with No Essay is 3 hours. Total exam time for the SAT with Essay is 3 hours and 50 minutes. The SAT with No Essay costs $46.00. The SAT with Essay costs $60.00. Late registration fees are $29.00 and waitlist fees are $49.00.
What to bring on test day: Admission ticket, acceptable photo ID, approved calculator, 2 number 2 pencils, snack for break, and extra batteries

ACCUPLACER

Advanced Placement (AP)
If your high school offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses, contact your AP coordinator for registration and testing information.
CHES
The CHES consists of 165 multiple choice questions. The total exam time is 3 hours and the cost varies.
What to bring on test day: Admission ticket, valid photo ID, number 2 pencils.
GMAT
The GMAT consist of four sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal. Total exam time is 3 hours 30 minutes and cost $250.00.
The GMAT is offered at the Pearson Professional Center in Greenville, NC. They can be reached at 252-493-0345 to help with specific questions related to the GMAT.
IB
If your high school offers International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, contact your IB Coordinator for registration and testing information.
TOEFL
The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. The maximum exam time limit is 4 hours 20 minutes and cost $195.00.
